Space wars are essential to the fabric of video game culture. Think about it! If people in space started settling things through diplomacy, millions of space marines would be out of a job. Thankfully, space people really like explosions and lasers and mechs, and you can't exactly use those wonderful toys to play croquet. Therefore, the citizens of the stars will most likely continue killing one another, giving us gamers ample opportunity to get our space war on.

How will we do it? Why, by playing PlanetSide 2, the upcoming sequel to the celebrated persistent-world MMOFPS. I know that sounds a bit complicated, but behind all the lingo is a challenging, engaging, and innovative gaming experience that blends the FPS framework with a constantly-evolving battlefield. The original PlanetSide was an underrated classic in my book and its follow-up looks like it will be similarly rewarding, especially since Sony Online Entertainment's recently added some icing to the explosive, mechanized cake. Official word is that PlanetSide 2 will be free-to-play. No word yet on any "freemium" features or microtransactions, though SOE prez John Smedley says he and his team "like League of Legends a lot." That's good news for anybody who's spent time on the Fields of Justice.

Smedley says the game's beta will begin when PlanetSide 2 is good and ready; that said, fans can expect a chance to join the online battle late this year or early next. So excited!
