This is the most frustrating kinda-crossover in gaming history: Neku, the protagonist from slick Nintendo DS RPG The World Ends With You, was reportedly spotted in the demo of Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance shown at this year's TGS. I'm gonna just let that sink in for a second, here. Neku, from The World Ends With You, in Kingdom Hearts. Yep. That just happened.
Now, Kingdom Hearts often features such crossovers from Final Fantasy characters, but this is the first time somebody from TWEWY has made the jump to the Disneyverse. It's probably nothing more than a simple, subtle nod to the fans--which would be cool and all, except that these two franchises both need proper sequels badly. In the case of The World Ends With You, I'd settle for basically any kind of follow-up. A true RPG sequel in the classic style would be great, of course, but hell, I'd settle for TWEWY Pinball if it got more of this fascinating world out into the gaming canon. On the Kingdom Hearts front, I've been waiting for Kingdom Hearts 3 for years now! Can Squeenix please pull it together, ditch all these crazy subtitles, and continue the stories of Sora, Kairi and the rest--the original heroes we fell in love with way back in 2002? You can't beat the classics here, people.
Still, if TWEWY 2 is just a pipe dream and Kingdom Hearts III is at least one more game away, I guess a Square Enix Reese's Cup isn't the worst consolation prize in the world.
