The Venice Film Festival has just announced the jury for its Persol 3-D award, which highlights the best of the year's 3-D offerings. The award--created in conjunction with sunglasses company Persol--has been around for only one year, but no doubt its jury will have a tougher time in this year's festival, with 18 titles from which to choose.
Takashi Shimizu (Ju-on, The Grudge) heads the jury, which includes Village Voice film critic Jim Hoberman and David Zamagni, an Italian stereoscopic specialist. They will give the award to one of the 3-D films released in Italy in the past 12 months--including Avatar, Alice in Wonderland, and Toy Story 3-D, as well as Korean film The Child's Eye.
What do you think, Ology readers--does establishing a 3-D award take the trend too far, or redeem it by finding true creativity within what seems like a gimmick?
(You have to admit the matching sunglasses are pretty cheesy.)
