Psych recap: Season 5, episode 8 "Shawn 2.0" (9/1/10)

Shawn and Gus make conversation with the girl behind the counter at their local coffee place. The question of the day is, "How many F bombs are in the film The Usual Suspects?" Shawn guesses 97, but a handsome stranger gets it right with 98. Shawn is immediately intimidated.

Lucy Freidman, 70, is found dead on her blanket in the park after a Philharmonic Concert. Shawn deduces that there is a link between Lucy's death and those of Peter Hodges and Veronica Miller earlier in the week. Handsome stranger buts in out of nowhere and steals Shawn's thunder, declaring that all three died within close proximity of an aerosol can. The man introduces himself as Declan Rand, a criminal profiler brought onto the case by Chief Vick.

At the police station, Declan gives a profile of the murder suspect, imagining a woman in her mid thirties, due to the mundanity of the killings. Shawn tells Declan he doesn't believe he can get a psychological take on someone he doesn't know. Declan counters by nailing Shawn's personality exactly.

The coroner informs them that the victims suffered from various liver diseases. Shawn, recalling something from the doctors in his trashy romance novel "Internity," deduces that the victims were murdered for their placement on a liver donor list. They obtain said list from the hospital, validating Shawn's theory. However, the next person on the list who stands to profit the most is a woman in her mid-thirties. Declan is praised heavily.

They track down Catherine and discover she's been out of town. The following two suspects hold no water. A witness to the first murder sketches the person who exchanged the aerosol can. It's Catherine, but Shawn isn't convinced, and after hearing Declan quote "Internity," he realizes he's a fraud. Shawn and Gus confront Declan, who confesses to being fake, but insists he didn't kill anyone. Later, they discover Catherine dead in an office building with Declan over her body. Although they arrest him, Shawn still thinks he's innocent. Shawn solves the case, returning to Catherine's apartment to find her twin sister Maddy, the real killer all along.
