This fall, "Cat Power" won't just be the secret nickname I give my lint roller when we're alone together. Our old pal Chan "Cat Power" Marshall is returning with a new album called Sun (her first since 2008's collection o' covers, Jukebox), out September 4 via Matador Records. The album was written and recorded right around the same time she parted ways with "oh yeah, that guy" actor Giovanni Ribisi, so expect a healthy dose of heartache on songs like lead single "Ruin," which you can check out and download for free over at Stereogum for a limited time.

First thoughts?
It's certainly catchier than your run of the mill downtrodden indie pop jam—love the slightly off-kilter, Latin-tinged pianos, those sprightly drums and (egads!) the gritty electric guitars. Plus, you know, whatever she's muttering along with those kick drums. Okay, okay, so it's not strictly a traditional breakup song, but there's more than a little bit of melancholy in between her double-tracked vocals, don't you think? "What are we doing? Sitting on a ruin…" I rest my case.
Sun tracklist:
"Cherokee"
"Sun"
"Ruin"
"3,6,9"
"Always On My Own"
"Real Life"
"Human Being"
"Manhattan"
"Silent Machine"
"Nothin' But Time"
"Peace And Love"
