DreamWorks Animation has been making it their mission to stretch films into franchises for years, including Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, and very soon, How to Train Your Dragon. It’s a strategy that pays massive dividends, as these movies don’t fall victim to the same harsh criticism from fans and critics that often plague live-action sequels. This week, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted remained at the top of the box office heap grabbing another $35.5 million. In two weeks alone, the threequel has almost made enough to cover the entirety of its $145 million budget. I must have blinked and remained fairly ignorant of the fact that this series is still in existence, but shockingly the reviews for each successive film get better and better. Maybe the Madagascar writers picked up a little bit of the Toy Story gene.
Controversial movie flavor of the month Prometheus remained in the number two spot gobbling up another $20.2 million in its Xenomorphic tentacles. It seems that word of mouth may have spurred a decline in ticket sales, but so long as people keep talking about Ridley Scott’s aesthetically magnificent, but flawed sci-fi epic, it’s bound to stay afloat.
Movie musical celeb-fest Rock of Ages rounded out the top three with an abysmal showing, raking in a mere $15 million. Based on trailers alone, I’m surprised it managed that.

Phlegm of the Week: That’s My Boy. Adam Sandler is systematically erasing every funny thing he’s ever done with each new movie he makes. All of his recent schlock has looked like the movies that were the butt of Funny People’s jokes.
Gem of the Week: Moonrise Kingdom. The more I think about Wes Anderson’s latest, the more it grows on me. One of his goofier films, Moonrise is filled with hilarious boy scout set-pieces, horribly awkward budding romance scenes, and Bill fucking Murray.
