I never played video games when I was growing up. But why, loser? Well, I don’t know. But growing up, I did discover Garbage, a band that supplied the perfect soundtrack to my life as a Daria-wannabe. So I don’t really associate the powerful, abrasive sounds of Garbage with the synthy goodness of Nintendo—I don’t think anyone does. But this new remix of Garbage’s 1998 album Version 2.0 puts a nostalgic twist on a grungy 90s favorite, with pleasantly strange results.
Lead singer Shirley Manson’s vocals aren’t included in the remix, but even without her sultry voice guiding the tracks, each bit-filled song races with the same melodic energy of the original. Do you have a favorite Garbage track on Version 2.0? Listen to the track in the free stream below, and then go back and listen to the original. It’s pretty amazing how Daryl Banner, the remix artist who’s used the same approach with Radiohead’s albums, highlights the electronic undertones of Version 2.0 to create a fully reimagined version of a rock favorite.
