As someone new to the Instagram app and the iPhone in general (praise be to Google Maps, The Savior of The Lost Girl), the new music video for Best Coast’s single “The Only Place” looks like it was funneled exclusively through Instagram. Because when we filter any image through the app, we are essentially removing it from boring, everyday perceptions of life and cataloging the moment as something more special than our ordinary experiences. By that definition, “The Only Place” is a 3 minute Instagram photo, if that makes any sense.
The California surf pop duo start out the video by packing their bags after a night of hard partying to set off for a series of oddball adventures. They throw Bobb Bruno’s drum kit into the ocean, smash a sad watermelon, and strap fireworks onto a bicycle, all while wearing matching “Best Coast” denim jackets. In the span of one day, Best Coast acts out a series of silly vignettes, turning an ordinary day into a sequence of memorable, photogenic skits with a California backdrop. The entire song is an ode to how great the state is, with Bethany Cosentino repeatedly asking, “Why would you live anywhere else?” I haven’t spent any considerable time in Cali, but paying $10 for a grilled cheese gives me a personal satisfaction that sun, sand, and happiness will never match.
