You better know of Ronald Poppo as the victim who had his face brutally and bizarrely chewed off by the psycho we call the "Causeway Cannibal."
This is kind of a "where are they now" piece; so here it is:
Somehow, Ronald Poppo is still alive. He's still hospitalized, amazingly, he's hanging in there, and even taking a positive outlook.
"He's pleased to report to all of you that he's feeling well, he's eating, he's walking around with physical therapy, he's talking with us," said Nicholas Namias, a University of Miami trauma surgeon.
Poppo lost his left eye in the wake of the attack, but doctors are working on restoring his vision in the right eye. He's been talking with doctors and surgeons about the possibilities of facial reconstruction in the future, but for now they are taking it one day at a time.
Obviously, he can't watch his in-room television, but he was eager to listen to last night's Heat-Thunder NBA finals game.
"Before I left the room to come down here today he asked me if I'd be watching the game tonight and he told me 'Go Heat,'" Namias said.
"He is honestly living in the moment. And I don't think I've said this about anyone before, but he's charming. He really is."
Prior to the attack, Poppo had been homeless for 30 years. Social workers are working with him to find a place to live when he is eventually released from the
In related news, it was recently discovered that the "Causeway Cannibal" was a misnomer for the attacker, Rudy Eugene. An autopsy revealed that Eugene did not have any of Poppo's flesh in his stomach, though he did have it stuck between his teeth. He was found to have several undigested pills in his stomach, though we don't know what the pills were, and official toxicology reports are not yet available. But pretty much everyone blames the attack on these wild, mysterious, evil bath salt things, even though no one has any idea what they are or what they do.
Hopefully Ronald Poppo has much better days in his future. After he got his face chewed off, there was nowhere to go but up!
