Rather than pulling in the usual buffet of classic rock clichés and songs you’re embarrassed to know, CNN’s Starting Point decided to actually be interesting via bringing on a hint of notable hip-hop that wasn’t a Kanye West track or the perpetual Jay-Z braggadocio media machine.
Alongside Soledad O’Brien, Nas sat down to discuss how parenthood has influenced his music career, most immediately chronicled on “Daughters,” the third single from his upcoming album, Life is Good, that's due out July 17th. And just to cover all the bases, Soledad tackled Nas’ use of the N-word in lyrics as well, which Nas shrugged off as his attempt to remain authentic to a younger crowd and the “street-corner language.”
Hearing Nas talk about his daughter is actually kind of sweet, since he seems genuinely remorseful about how his position in the music business made it even more difficult to be a single father and role model simultaneously.
The clip below is just under 5 minutes, and I wish it were longer, because he’s an intelligent guy who doesn’t discuss rap as if it’s an insular bubble, but rather how his career has seeped into his personal life, for better or worse. Nas seems to have different priorities these days, but he’s still one of the most accomplished rappers in the game who’s managed to turn each stage of his life into a musical triumph. He ends the interview by giving a shout out to his daughter Destiny, who turns 18 on Friday. But seriously, what do you get that guy for Father’s Day?
