Don't fuck with David Stern, even if you're a guy like Jim Rome, who has made a living fucking with people. Oops, sorry, Jim Rome, don't take offense!
The famously prickly NBA Commissioner took offense to Jim Rome's asking about whether or not the NBA Draft was rigged. In Rome's defense -- and he said as much -- there's always been speculation about a rigged lottery, and this year the team the NBA still owns (the New Orleans Hornets, even though a deal has been made to sell the team to Tom Benson) won the first overall pick.
David Stern responds with a classic version of, "I'll answer your question with another question." Unfortunately for everyone, that question was, "Have you stopped beating your wife yet?"
Deadspin has the audio if you want to listen to some awkward debate that turns personal, but it's clear that Stern chose a poor way to point out that Rome's question was accusatory and leading.
We don't know if Jim Rome has stopped beating his wife yet, but we do know that this whole situation could have been avoided with the Bryce Harper Approach. If David Stern hated the question so much, all he had to do was say, "That's a clown question, bro." Even Rome had the opportunity to respond in kind when the wife-beating question was posed, but both failed to take a lesson from Bryce Harper.
Remember kids: The next time someone asks you something you don't want to hear, all you have to do is say, "That's a clown question, bro."
