To cop the time-honored adage, Rufus Wainwright could sing the Yellow Pages and it would still sound fantastic. I'd say that he could even make chewing gum jingles sound like musical works of art but, as Funny Or Die's latest musical crossover proves, the sugar-free sounds of our youth were already pretty awesome to begin with. Check out everyone's favorite gay piano-playing opera-writing singing/songwriting super genius in "Rufus Wainwright Does Gum" below.
I'd concur with Amrit over at Stereogum that reading off cue cards isn't exactly Rufus's calling in life, but his take on the classic gum jingles are… well, kind of awesome. Kind of better than his last album degrees of awesome, I'm reluctant to admit. Do you hear the bittersweet ring in his voice during "Big Red"? Has he sounded that gorgeously melancholic since Poses? Not really. The old codgers who wrote these things sure knew what they were doing—I'm genuinely sad that "Rufus Does Gum" isn't going to be a real three-night performance. Well, not yet, anyway.
