In a move that we probably all saw coming, Vogue decided to follow up Lady Gaga's uber-successful March 2011 cover by rewarding her with this year's much-coveted September spot. The news comes hot on the heels of her feud with Madonna, who called Gaga's work "reductive" of her down. What's that saying about bad publicity?
Anyway, WWD reports that Mother Monster has already been snapped by veteran photog pair Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott for the cover, which will be a wide shot instead of a portrait. Maybe it'll be of both her AND alter ego Jo Calderone? One can only hope. The cover is in conjunction with the launch of her new perfume - you know, the one that she described as the scent of "blood and semen"? All right!
While I'd have loved to see a veteran like Abbey Lee (happy birthday, girl!) or even someone like runway maven Zuzanna Bijoch take the September cake, the move to hand the cover to Gaga—who boasts a ridiculous 52 million Facebook followers and just about half that on Twitter—totally makes sense. Even if 10% of them pick up the cover, Vogue's made its quota. Besides, Gaga suffered a concussion and still went on to perform more than a dozen songs. If that's not an impressive work ethic, I don't know what is.
I guess after Vogue tapped super Kate Moss for 2011's issue, somebody had to restore the celebrity cover tradition, right? Anyway, take the poll below and let us know in the comments who your choice for Vogue's September cover girl would be!
