Watch She & Him's Zooey Deschanel-Directed "I Could've Been Your Girl" Video
Zooey "Is That Rain?" Deschanel has directed a painfully adorable new video for She & Him's new Volume 3 (out now) single "I Could've Been Your Girl." As debuted earlier today on Deschanel's website (which I didn't previously know but am completely unsurprised to learn is called Hello Giggles), the video was reportedly inspired by Zooey's favorite musicals from the 1960s… because of course, right?

I think Chris Martin was destined to play in the dirt. I'm not sure what it is about the awkward, self-defacing, hopeless romantic piano playing unlikely showman that meshes so well with the great outdoors— maybe it's because the first words any of us heard coming out of his mouth were, "Look at the stars." Maybe it's because his band used to play acoustic guitars, the only musical instrument that doesn't sound preposterous on the beach. Who knows? There's a nice moment in Coldplay's new "Princess Of China" music video that, for me at least, harkens back to their first: Martin, kneeling in the sand, looking at a star. Of course, the rest of "Princess Of China" is all lavish buffoonery—a high-budget [insert your favorite Chinese kung-fu import from the early '00s] homage that gave Martin and Rihanna the chance to wear cool costumes and play around in front of a green screen for a few days.
It's probably a moot point, but I couldn't help but wonder what the rest of Coldplay do with themselves while Chris Martin is off learning wirework with Rihanna. Does Jonny Buckland spend time with his model aircraft collection? Does Will Champion have a secret passion for amateur bird watching? Does Guy Berryman stay up at night bemoaning the fact that half of the people who downloaded Mylo Xyloto will never know his name?
I suppose it's a testament to how creatively distracted Coldplay have gotten that, moments after watching it, I can't remember a single frame from the video. I doubt anyone will enjoy watching it as much as Rihanna enjoyed picking out her wardrobe. Chris, as always, is a good sport about this sort of thing, but I think we all know that, deep inside, he doesn't really think his band is the biggest thing since day-glo orange. I bet he misses writing small songs and counting all the faces at his shows. I bet, in his heart, he's still mucking around on the beach, kicking up sand and looking up at the sky.
