FOR GOD'S SAKE IT WAS SO CLOSE TO BEING OVER.
The John Edwards trial, which was to rule on whether the ex-candidate misappropriated campaign funds to orchestrate his schtupping of the Flooze-a-tron 3000, was supposed to come to an end Thursday afternoon, when the jury, which has been deliberating for eight days now, said that they had reached a verdict.
Unfortunately, they appeared to have meant "a" verdict as in one, not a unanimous verdict on all counts, which is the only time they're supposed to convene the court. Via ABC News, which has a bigger stomach for this nonsense than PoliticOlogy:
Jurors told Judge Catherine Eagles it had reached a unanimous verdict only on Count 3 of the indictment. That charge pertains specifically to more than $700,000 in donations wealthy heiress Rachel "Bunny" Mellon gave Edwards to allegedly cover up an illicit affair and illigitimate child.
When it suddenly became clear that the jury had not reached a verdict on all the counts, the judge sent the jury back into deliberations, and Twitter went apeshit.
The defense has asked the judge to accept the one verdict (we don't know if it's guilty or not) and declare a mistrial on all other counts, which means this trial would end as much an embarrassment as the actions that began it. The judge apparently is considering it. (UPDATE: He has given the jury the rest of the day to come to a decision on remaining five charges.)
PoliticOlogy may or may not keep you up to date on developments, depending on how stupid they are.
