A new Scott Walker ad gets way deep into the muck, accusing Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett of ignoring "hundreds of beatings, stabbings and child abuse cases" under his tenure to create a drop in crime statistics.
This is:
a) A pretty low blow from the Walker campaign, and a sign that Walker absolutely does not want to keep talking about the massive union fight that he started and that got him recalled. Crime ads are a classic diversion: don't pay attention to Wisconsin's sliding employment numbers, they say, worry about the sound you just heard from your backyard. (The fact that the website associated with the ad is tomthetaxer.com shows how far from Walker's initial, fiscal policy-based argument this ad is.)
c) Not exactly the ad of a man running away with an election, as the polls suggest. Barrett's campaign said a few days ago they had internal polling showing the candidates neck and neck, but nobody really bought it, given that every public poll showed Walker opening up a five point lead. "Vote For Scott Walker Or You'll Be Assaulted" is not the ad of a confident candidate.
All that having been said, everything points to a Walker victory, including the tendency for recall elections to break for the incumbent in the end, as voters lose the fury that first made them sign a petition and begin to have second thoughts over ousting an elected official. But it doesn't look like Scott Walker's people are taking any chances. Next they'll have Tom Barrett eating a guy's face on the side of the road.
