Seriously, how many 71-year-olds do you know that are about to release their 35th studio album? (Milton, the slightly loopy homeless man on the 4 Train who sings "Blue Suede Shoes" at 4 in the morning, doesn't count). You guys might be finished celebrating Bob Dylan's seventy-first (we're still playing Blood On The Tracks on a loop here at Camp MusicOlogy… boast-shrug) but some exciting news just tricked down the grapevine: Dylan's new studio album could be in hands and playlists as soon as this September… and yes, you will listen to him rasp and wail about the H.M.S. Titanic for 14 straight minutes. And you'll love it. A lot. Guaranteed.
Happy Birthday Bob Dylan: 10 Things We're Pretty Sure You Don’t Know About Bobby D
According to Dylan fan site Isis Magazine (via Consequence of Sound), the album was recorded earlier this year with Dylan's touring band and guest musician David Hidalgo, who was "brought in primarily to play accordion and guitar… but ended up adding Mexican instruments.” You know, as one does. The ten-track album will feature the aforementioned Titanic epic, plus another song clocking in around 9 minutes.
By my count, Dylan's song will beat out Gordon Lightfoot's "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by a whopping 7 and a half minutes to become pop music's longest, awesomest song about a shipwreck. Excited? I know I am.
