Jamie Anne Allman may be most prominently known for her role as Martha Shaw alongside Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams in The Notebook. Currently, she holds a starring role in the hit AMC series, The Killing, which focuses on the investigation of Rosie Larsen’s murder. Jamie’s character, Terry Marek, is Mitch Larsen’s younger sister and Rosie’s aunt.
I recently caught up with Jamie and we discussed her character in The Killing, the show itself and yes, of course I asked about Ryan Gosling!
Be sure to check out The Killing, Sunday nights at 9 p.m. on AMC.
Is there anything you can tell about what’s to come for your character, Terry Marek, in The Killing as the finale approaches?
Jamie Anne Allman: Yes. For the rest of the episodes, there’s some stuff coming up with her and Mitch [Larsen]. I think Terry feels like she’s been jipped a little bit, and that she didn’t really make a choice on that sudden lifestyle. She’s very selfless and caring, and when push comes to shove, she didn’t really know how to take on that burden. I think that takes a toll on her, and the fact that her sister just bails on her kids and on her husband, and I don’t think Terry really likes that. There’s going to be some stuff that comes to head with her and her sister coming up that should be pretty interesting.
Do you and Terry have any similarities or are you complete opposites?
I feel like I try to find what I have in common with every character that I play, so with Terry, she does have a vulnerability and some passion that she carries, and she also uses her humor to cover up how she feels. And I feel like I use my humor to cover up how I feel sometimes. So we definitely have that in common.
Do you have a favorite episode or scene that you’ll always remember from the show?
I have many, but one that comes to mind - that’s still kind of fresh - is one that just aired where I got kicked out of the house by Stan [Larsen]. That was an amazing scene. It was a very intense scene, and I was really caught by his yell, that was actually more like a roar, when he kicked me out of the house. I had to shoot that scene over and over, which at one point when they said cut, I couldn’t even stop crying because his voice just trailed through my bones. Even though it was intense, it was really an amazing moment, so I will never forget that scene.
So I have to ask, what was it like working with Ryan Gosling in The Notebook?
(Laughs) You asked just like so many girls that come up to me, and I can hear your fondness and adoration in your voice. Do you want to know how he is as a person or how he was to work with? Or all of the above?
All of the above!
When I worked with Ryan, I was in South Carolina and it was beautiful there. So amazing. And I had no idea how adored that movie would be, and I had no idea what I was going to be working on. Ryan hadn’t really broken yet as an actor, and Rachel hadn’t either even though she’d done Mean Girls. I just thought I was doing an independent film, you know, ‘no big deal,’ and I was just floored with ‘wow, this is just amazing’ after it all came to film. And Ryan was really cool. He’s very down to earth and everyone knows, now that he did Crazy Stupid Love, that he’s really funny. He had a great sense of humor and he’s really funny, so I like that he’s getting into comedy; I would love to do a comedy with him. We joked around a lot of the time, and it was just really fun.
What about Rachel McAdams?
I didn’t get to know her as much, maybe because I was playing the other woman [Martha Shaw]. She seems really sweet and nice from my interactions with her, but they were kind of short since I didn’t work with her very much.
When people first meet you, do they ever assume that you’re a certain way because of the characters you’ve played?
I would like to say no, but then as soon as they do realize that I have a personality and I’m funny and I’m not that way, they’re like ‘Wow, you’re so funny! Wow, you’re so nice!’ if they do have misconceptions, they keep them secret, but yes, they do have them. They just don’t tell me what they are, and when they find out, I’m always like ‘yeah, I’m an actor.’
Is there anything in particular you like to do when you have free time?
Yes, when I have free time I love, of course, hanging out with my husband, Marshall Allman - he’s amazing! - and my family and friends. And I’m really getting into photography right now, so I take pictures and do little photo shoots with my friends’ babies, and my friends – stuff like that. I’m flushing out my stand-up set right now. I’m going to probably start digging around, doing some local mics, and I’m writing a script with my husband. So when I’m not working, I try to keep myself busy with stuff that I love.
What about TV? Are there any televisions shows that you have to watch?
There are many. I feel like TV is so golden right now. But my favorite show that I can’t wait for season 5 is Breaking Bad. I love, love, love that show. I love Homeland, American Horror Story and I’ve watched Girls on HBO.
I’ve heard that show (Girls) is funny.
It doesn’t make me laugh like my pants off, like Bridesmaids, but it puts a smile on my face and keeps me entertained.
