The hopeful, uplifting final act to Bruce Springsteen's embittered new album Wrecking Ball (our rave review) kicks off with a surprisingly laid-back, hip-hop-tinged bit of gospel-blues business called "Rocky Ground." Featuring a rapped verse by backing vocalist Michelle Moore, the album's third single is a bold, lush departure from the boisterous Occupy-friendly sounds of "We Take Care Of Our Own" and "Death To My Hometown," so it's only right that the accompanying video should be equally meditative, introspective and spiritually inspiring.
No sweat-drenched live performances… no Occupy-friendly political fuel… just stark, low-contrast black and white footage of a small American town fallen on hard times. If you cut Bruce out of the "Streets Of Philadelphia" video, it would look something like this, don't you think? Not crazy about the notepad, but Springsteen's Wrecking Ball lyrics are easily his most focused and direct to date—it makes sense that he'd want to highlight them, especially with a song as ruminative as "Rocky Ground."
So, yeah—it's not a visual stunner, but it doesn't mean to be. It's (more importantly) excuse enough to listen to Wrecking Ball for another 10 or 20 times in a row, wouldn't you agree?
