One of two things happened when you opened your browser this morning—you either screamed, "What is that Star Trek computer doing on my homepage? Oh my god, ew, NERDS DID THIS!" in terror, or you screamed, "What is a vintage Mini-Moog doing on my homepage? Oh my god, yes, NERDS DID THIS!" In either case, don't freak out, we're here to help.
The latest interactive Google Doodle is a tribute to electronic music pioneer Robert Moog, who would have turned 78 today (Moog died of cancer in 2005). Moog, born in New York City, began crafting his namesake modular synthesizers in the mid '60s. "When people hear the word 'synthesizer' they often think 'synthetic'—fake, manufactured, unnatural," says Google software engineer Joey Hurst. "In contrast, Bob Moog's synthesizers produce beautiful, organic and rich sounds that are, nearly 50 years later, regarded by many professional musicians as the epitome of an electronic instrument."
