John commented on I Have A Lot To Say About 'The Great Gatsby' Trailer:
“I think it's visually beautiful, just like most of his movies. I also don't really feel like the music is a bad touch. I mean, for god's sake, Romeo + Juliet was set in modern times with guns. I think it adds a nice flair. The only thing that I don't like is that I always considered Gatsby to be this mysterious figure who isn't seen very often. So I don't like that they're showing him so much : /”

Alright everyone take a deep breath and have a seat because we are going to sit here and discuss the first trailer for The Great Gatsby. Are you comfortable? Good.

Pretty much everyone has read the book. If you haven't you really weren't paying attention in 10th grade English. You kids these days, with your music and texting! Anyway, read the book. It's great. It's got a lot of symbolism but it's not overwhelming. The whole thing makes you feel very smart and emotional and complex when you finish. That's a good thing.

And while it may not be your cup of tea, a lot of you have seen a Baz Luhrmann film. No, not Australia, don't be ridiculous. That movie was better the first time around when it was called Kangaroo Jack. No, I'm talking about Romeo + Juliet OR Moulin Rouge! which was basically Romeo + Juliet but gayer and French. But it's fun stuff. Luhrmann knows how to do the visual aspect of film. He makes really lovely sets and fills them with really lovely props and really lovely people. He's great at it.

But still, some people (myself) were confused over the fact that Luhrmann was directing a reboot/adaptation of the Fitzgerald novel. How could this visually focused director capture all the nuances in one of the best American novels? And the fact that it is in 3-D? Were green lights and drunk drivers going to be rocketing at our face?

So here's this trailer. This trailer. It's not...bad. It's actually kind of unsettling. It most certainly looks like fun. Don't get me wrong, it makes me want to see the movie. But there's an initial shock that happens when you hear Kanye and Jay-Z's "No Church In The Wild." This is a f*cking Fitzgerald story, arguably the greatest Fitzgerald story, and the soundtrack involves someone that once got drunk at the VMA's.

(The other song used is Jack White's "Love Is Blindness." Jack White is the sexiest man alive, by the way.)

Yet despite the contemporary music, I like it. A lot. I mean, I think we can all agree that Tobey Maguire is a bit of a tool. Then again, when you think about it, Nick Carraway was kind of a tool. And while I don't think anybody pictured Leonardo DiCaprio when they read it, his performance as Jay looks pretty intriguing. Then you have Joel Edgerton who's acting is face off. It all has the possibility of being very, very good.

In the Luhrmann way, not the Fitzgerald way.

Here's the trailer, but head on over to Apple for the better version.

What do you think?
