I know this comes to a shock to everyone out there, but the non-profit, amateur business of college football is driven by one thing: money. It just so happens that three pieces of news all fell today.
1. The Big Ten Network made a $79.2 million profit in 2011, off of $242 million in revenue.
2. The SEC is working with ESPN to develop its own network, probably for 2014, and it was confirmed that the only reason the SEC wanted to expand to 14 teams and include Missouri and Texas A&M was that such an expansion would trigger a clause allowing the conference to renegotiate its durrent television deal with ESPN.
3. At the Big East coaches/commissioners meetings, Notre Dame reminded everyone that the Fighting Irish will be very much in demand if things goes south with the Big East.
"I'll say this: if it doesn't work out [in the Big East], everybody's got a spot for us," Brey said, adding: "We're f*cking Notre Dame, for crying out loud." $$$
Apropos of nothing, here is the NCAA's mission statement:
"Our purpose is to govern competition in a fair, safe, equitable and sportsmanlike manner, and to integrate intercollegiate athletics into higher education so that the educational experience of the student-athlete is paramount."
$$$ He didn't actually say that last part.
