Can seafaring aliens and Tim Riggins take down The Avengers or will the band of mismatched superheroes continue their historic run? Here's what is foolishly trying to keep you cooped up inside a dark theater during what is supposed to be a gorgeous weekend:
Battleship
Metacritic Score: 41
Box Office Prediction: $30 million
There's going to be an FAQ going up soon that answers all of your questions about this highly anticipated blockbuster. But can Battleship pay proper respect to the complex mythology of the game? If it does, it must be a shoo-in for the Oscar right? I know the competition will be stiff this year, but with dazzling actors like Rihanna in their corner, I think this plucky movie just may have a shot
The Dictator
Metacritic Score: 59
Box Office Prediction: $30 million
This has already been in theaters since Wednesday but I know literally no one who has seen it or even has any interest in seeing it. Remember when Borat was a huge deal? And Sasha Baron Cohen actually felt like a fresh new voice? What crazy days. Anyway, critics actually didn't hate this (and one or two even compared it to my all-time favorite comedy Duck Soup) so maybe this is more subversive than it seems.
What To Expect When You're Expecting
Metacritic Score: 43
Box Office Prediction: $15 million
I think it's a sign of just how low our expectations for Hollywood have sunk that no one even cares about how craven and crass this movie is. I mean, it's every bit as ridiculous as Battleship, right? We're talking about a self-help book with literally no plot whose title is only being co-opted here because people will recognize the brand. Oh and somehow, Garry Marshall had nothing to do with this. I'm as surprised as you are.
Hysteria
Metacritic Score: 53
Hysteria looks funny enough, but it seems oddly stodgy for a movie about the invention of the vibrator (I almost said “stiff” instead of “stodgy” but I dodged that bullet!). And the critical response has ranged from polite applause to reserved silence. So even though the cast, led by Maggie Gyllenhaal, looks promising, you may be better off saving that money and pre-ordering a ticket to Moonrise Kingdom.
And don't miss
Sound of My Voice
Metacritic Score: 69
Sound of My Voice has pretty much limped its way through its theatrical release, which is a shame because the movie is a tense, creative, and surprising spin on the cult thriller/horror genre. If it's still playing near you, take the time to check it out so you can say you knew rising star Brit Marling way back when.
