Fans braced themselves during last night's season 8 finale of Grey's Anatomy, knowing that one of their favorite characters may meet his/her death. After the crash, the doctors who were only battered and bruised slowly, but surely, got to their feet and began helping those who were more severely injured. Meredith and Cristina suffered the least from the crash, Arizona's leg exposed her bone, Mark appeared less injured than he actually was, Derrick was (initially) no where to be found, and Lexie was trapped underneath the wing of the plane.
The impending death came sooner than fans (or at least I) expected. The doctors were unable to move the wing of the plane, and Lexie's last minutes were filled with tears from both her and Mark. She had just revealed her love for Mark, and now she was asking him to: "Please, tell Meredith that I love her and that she was a good sister. Please tell my dad..." And Mark's response was the tear-jerker of the night: "No, you're not dying. You don't die today. We're gonna have the best life, you and me. We're gonna be so happy. So you can't die, okay? You can't die. Because we're supposed to end up together. We're meant to be."
After hearing Meredith's cries, Derrick returned with his arm badly damaged from debris from the plane, and she, along with Cristina, used their only resources to repair his and Mark's injuries.
Meanwhile, at Seattle Grace, Dr. Webber planned his traditional dinner, Dr. Hunt fired Teddy, and Dr. Bailey proposed to Ben... again. However, all of these happenings seemed minor, considering that 5 doctors from the hosiptal were trapped in the woods, and one of their beloved friends is now dead. Dr. Hunt received several concerning voicemails because the doctors had not yet arrived to their destination, even though they should have landed hours prior.
The doctors remained trapped and injured in the woods after the plane crash, and Meredith closed the episode with the familiar words of Dr. Webber: "The years we spend as surgical residents will be the best and worst of our lives. We will be pushed to our breaking point. This is the starting line. This is our arena. How we play? That's up to us."
