Monday night's special performance of West End musical We Will Rock You will feature the classic Queen line-up, including late frontman Freddie Mercury. At least that's the effect they're going for—in a new interview with the BBC, guitarist Brian May gingerly describes the new optical effect that will allow Mercury's likeness to appear on stage. Just don't compare it to the 2Pac hologram. It's so totally not a hologram, you guys! Yeah.
Non-Interview: 2Pac Hologram On Coachella, Modern Hip-Hop And Those Pesky Tour Rumors
"It's a little unfortunate they did that thing with Tupac as we've been trying to make Freddie appear on the stage for quite a while," says May (via Rolling Stone). "[That technique] is something we've looked at ourselves, but I think probably for a show that runs eight shows a week it's not really quite practical."
Well, Freddie being dead is, in and of itself, pretty impractical, but whatever. May goes on to stress that the new effect is an "optical illusion of sorts", not a hologram, and that, "People will come out saying 'Did we actually see Freddie?'"
If it turns out to be Adam Lambert (or Lady Gaga) with a fake mustache, I'm throwing my copy of Night At The Opera out the window. Mark my words.
How do you guys feel about all these holograms/"optical illusions" running rampant? Let us know in the comments section below.
