Remember that time H&M used a very, very (very) tan Isabeli Fontana for its latest swimsuit campaign and everyone kind of cocked their heads and stared at the bronzeness? Well you should because it was only three days ago. Though a spokesperson for the Swedish retailer had originally defended their choice to use the Brazilian model - claiming that her naturally darker skin better showcased the "bold colors and strong prints" of the summer swim line than a European woman could - H&M is backtracking and issuing an apology for advertising an unrealistic beauty ideal. SPF, people! SPF!
"We are sorry if we have upset anyone with our latest swimwear campaign. It was not our intention to show off a specific ideal or to encourage dangerous behaviour, but was instead to show off our latest summer collection. We have taken note of the views and will continue to discuss this internally ahead of future campaigns."
You know how all this could have been avoided? If H&M just used Nyasha, Jourdan or Ajak for the ads instead. Do you think H&M's apology is sincere? Better yet, are you still planning to take advantage of the $5 bikini tops?
