Teen Wolf Season 2 premieres on June 3rd, and the one question that has yet to be answered is how the tides will change now that there's a brand new wolf in charge. Does he represent a threat to Scott and Allison's relationship? Will he use his powers to wreak havoc on the hunters? Derek isn't entirely good or completely evil, but he is the Alpha, so Tyler Hoechlin has some explaining to do By Terron R. Moore

OLOGY: So, here’s what we want to know: what’s it like playing a piece of man meat?
[Laughs] Uh, y’know… hey! We come to work, we do our job, and we go home! We do whatever they write on the pages! [Laughs]
Your most exposed moment had to be when Stiles makes you take off your shirt for Danny, and I can’t help but feel like that had to be interesting.
It was funny. It was definitely… it was a scene that [we worked on] a lot! We were just trying to find the best way to make it funny! We saw it as a moment to be humorous, and I think that’s what really sets our show apart, that we bring a lot of humor into this science-fiction serious drama. It was definitely a fun scene, and I think a lot of people remember that scene, actually! I see it brought up on Twitter every now and then.
Derek’s a giant good/evil mess of a guy. What’s it like playing both of his sides?
It’s really, really fun. You get to blur the lines a bit, kind of walk that tight rope of good and bad, and it makes it very fun to come to work. If he’s a hero, he’s also got his selfish reasons, so that still makes him a bit of an evil plotter. But there’s also times where he’s bad, but it actually ends up being a necessary evil. Jeff [Davis] and I compare him a lot to Magneto, as far as the fact that he’s really just defending his people. But because of the perspective we take on it, he’s labeled as the bad guy. He may be attacking these hunters, but these hunters are also attacking his family. It’s kind of like putting on two different faces. Sometimes you wear them both on the same day.
So Derek in Season 2: Good or evil?
I have to say that we’re gonna continue the mystery of Derek. There are a lot of things still hidden under the surface and he’s just as secretive as he was in season one.
As he always does. He’s a pain in the ass.
Exactly! He frustrates a lot of people, including Scott. He still plays everything close to the chest and still makes sure that his agenda is being fulfilled before anybody else’s. Sometimes he has to give information and sometimes he has to withhold it, and there will be a lot more of that in season two.
It’s a great representation of your bromance with Stiles. Do we get more of that in Season 2?
Absolutely. I know that personally my favorite relationship with Derek last year was Derek and Stiles because they’re the two most contrasting personalities on the show. You have the very—I don’t want to say obnoxious—but the very lively and loud character of Stiles, and then you have the stern and emotionless character of Derek. So putting them together is a fun dynamic, and there’ll definitely be more Stiles and Derek this season. Hopefully it’ll be even better than last year!
So what’s the come in the season?
Everything goes a little further this year. With season one, what we realized early on was that the expectations for the show were not very high, and we kind of took that as a challenge, to show that we could exceed those expectations far beyond what they were. And I think we did that. So in Season 2 the expectations are much higher, and so we’re going to do our best and take it as another challenge to exceed even those. So everything gets a little bit bigger, the plot thickens, there’s more twists, there’s new characters... there’s just a lot of new things going on while still allowing the main characters and the main relationships to remain intact.
Last year, Derek had a twisted romance with Kate, but will we see any love for him this year?
I will have to give that answer to that question over to Jeff Davis. Because he’s the one writing the words down on the page. We’ll see!
