This post will be of special interest to all of the voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, as their new frontrunner has been announced. Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, the team behind Meet the Spartans and Date Movie, have announced the details on their next project. Yes, it will be a spoof of The Hunger Games and yes, it will be called The Starving Games.
After releasing Vampires Suck in 2010, Friedberg and Seltzer have been taking a Malickian leave of absence, presumably to give their ideas the proper time and space to fully bloom. A spoof movie, after all, cannot be rushed and it wasn't until The Hunger Games that the team felt truly inspired to set back about their groundbreaking work. While the movie is also said to include parodies of The Avengers and Harry Potter, but there's still no word about which D-List celebrities will cameo (although I have no doubt that at least one Jersey Shore cast member will be in this). Given that it is a Friedberg and Seltzer film, I assume part of the delay was due to the need to perfect new camera techniques and digital technology, in order to fully bring their vision to life, while also taking the time to make sure the script properly reflected their vision. Now, the only question that remains is whether the directors will complete production in time to be a player in the 2012 Best Picture race or if they will wait to debut the film at Cannes 2013.
