After their game five loss to Miami, it was evident that New York still had work to do in terms of building a roster capable of competing with the game's elite.
Looking forward, the Knicks have few tradeable assets and no first round picks. Which means their only real chance at improving the roster is through the free agent market, not a promising avenue when you consider their top priority is using their mid-level exception to resign Jeremy Lin.
The Knicks' only real shot at acquiring legitimate talent is the hope that Steve Nash, a Manahattan apartment owner and New Yorker's wet dream, is willing to except less money to swap purple for blue.
This is what Amare told Frank Isola yesterday after the game:
“Everyone knows that Steve loves New York and that New York loves Steve,” Stoudemire told The Daily News. “I love Steve. It would be great to have him here next year.”
Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld is reporting that the Suns are ready to offer Nash a two-year, $20 million offer, a proposal the Knicks won't be able to match. However at 38-years old, Nash might as well run in place on a mouse-wheel than play another two years in Phoenix.
Nash in New York makes crazy sense. Of course the Knicks need his leadership and "floor general" qualities. But imagine how effective of a mentor he'd be for Jeremy Lin? That would be like an aspiring painter becoming Picasso's apprentice.
Lin is also capable playing off the ball, which he did routinely at Harvard. He can play behind Nash or alongside him. They'd make such a cute little backcourt.
With the Suns going nowhere fast and the Knicks a Nash away from being competitive, there's no better time to jump ship.
