What do you do when your political opponent just became the first president in U.S. history to endorse a particular civil right? It kinda produces a tingly feeling, huh, even if you don't like the guy. History and all that. Shep Smith definitely feels it:
Think that's what he would have said on a normal day?
The right wing sphere in general was a little quiet after Obama's announcement, perhaps to avoid making the Daily Show news reel like old Shep. But after a few minutes, conservatives finally shook themselves off and got to work. Here's a roundup of the best spin the right wing media could pull off in an hour:
Fox Nation leads with "Obama Flip Flops, Declares War On Marriage." I thought we were done with the whole "war on ___" stuff after the right whined so hard about the war on women, but I guess not. Also note that the side bar, right next to the headline about how gay marriage should be illegal, says "The Fox Nation is for those opposed to intolerance."
Breitbart.com is relatively restrained, mostly going the Federalist angle. The site, which isn't quite the smooth invective machine that is Fox Nation, probably needs a little more time to get something sufficiently acidic together.
The Daily Caller shows how it's done: "Evolution Complete: In political move with limited impact, Obama backs gay marriage." Biff bang boom done. Don't even need to read the article.
Meanwhile, the Conservative Twitterati observed a moment of silence for Obama's evolution on gay marriage on Wednesday, or perhaps was busy racking its collective head thinking of ways to disapprove. The most popular: Gay marriage is a distraction from the economy/debt, why is this the only issue on which Obama's a federalist, and Obama is just playing demographic politics.
Anyway, y'all have fun being on the "wrong side of history" for the next six months.
