10 Things I Hate About You may be the seminal teen movie of the period of time that is best known to me as "Middle School" but which, to you, is the late 1990s and early 2000s. Sure, it was a halcyon time for the genre, with American Pie, Varsity Blues, and Cruel Intentions, but 10 Things I Hate About You still rises above the rest. The movie was a witty update of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew that cleverly drained most of that play's problematic elements and recast it in a high school. The cast was also top-notch. The movie may be best remembered for being Heath Ledger's breakout but it also launched Julia Stiles' career and had Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Alex Mack Ken Cosgrove's wife Larisa Oleynick.
The movie still makes a lot of money and remains pretty popular which means that you can see where this is going! It's sequel time! Director Gil Junger, who made the first one, is refreshingly honest about his reasons for going back to the well, telling Variety that he made more in residuals from the movie last year than he did in 1999 for directing it. Also, it was inspired by coming across a man who had committed suicide by jumping off a scenic outlook? Okay man, whatever inspires you I guess.
Captain America star Hayley Atwell is the first actor to sign on to this bizarre, puzzling movie, which is tentatively titled 10 Things I Hate About Life and, to be honest, number eight or nine on that list for me right now is the existence of this entire project.
