We're still waiting for Animal Collective to finish their proper follow-up to 2009'sMerriweather Post Pavilion (according to reports, the band began work on the new album this January), but to help tide us over a little longer, the wonky indie rockers are releasing a new 7" single (featuring brand spanking new songs "Honeycomb" and "Gotham") on June 26 via Domino Records.
No word yet on whether the new songs will feature on the forthcoming Animal Collective LP, but in the meantime, you can stream 'em both in the retro vinyl widget thingamabob below.

Okay, so first things first... "Honeycomb". Grabs you by the pigtails and shakes you around a little bit, doesn't it? Love the off the wall drums and clanging percussion and how it rumbles and rolls over that post-Blue Man Group bassline. It's certainly more accessible than your average Animal Collective tune—melodically, at least. I've got the chorus melody stuck in my head, which, come to think of it, might be a first from them. Much rejoicing.
"Gotham" feels a bit more like tried and true Animal Collective with its vocal wails and swirling electric guitar dreamscapes. The rhythms here are just as wonky, giving the track a cavernous, curious vibe for Avery Tare to play around with. The analogue electronics of Merriweather are (at least on first listen) nowhere to be found, so expect to hear something completely different and new on their ninth album. As if I even had to say that.
