Last night I had the immense pleasure to be invited to a very special evening with the great minds behind Sherlock, PBS' Masterpiece Mystery hit. Seriously, if you haven't watched this show on Netflix yet, you're missing out on one of the greatest adaptations of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's series. The second season premieres this Sunday on PBS. I know what you're thinking- "Sunday? There's just so much TV on Sunday. I don't know if I can handle it." Well, turn on your DVR and stop your bitching. It is worth your time.
Anyway, Sherlock comes from the mind of Mark Gatiss and Doctor Who's Steven Moffat. The latter was at the even along with wife and Sherlock producer Sue Vertue. And then...there was Benedict Cumberbatch (you can talk about him/ find out news about him here). That's right; It was Sherlock himself, the next Kahn and subject to many desires. His group of female fans are called the Cumberbitches. They came in droves last night and screamed. A lot.
Here are the things I learned while sitting in the excited theater:
1. The Cumberbitches/ other fans of the Sherlock series are loud. They are passionate, they are smart and they are loud. I think the level of spontaneous screaming to Cumberbatch's mere presence would be similar to what Bieber experiences.
2. Fans of Sherlock probably know more about the show than the creators do. They didn't have a problem correcting the panel director and series exec producer Rebecca Eaton when she accidentally said Mark Gatiss played Moriarty in the series (he actually plays Mycroft...DUH).
3. Benedict Cumberbatch doesn't care about your problems. When a fan asked if motivations behind Sherlock was based around Machiavelli's The Prince, Cumberbatch said no, but he read the book in school. The fan replied "I read it for fun." To which the handsome actor replied "I don't care about your problems." It sounds insincere, but I promise that it wasn't. It was cute and got a huge laugh from the audience and the fan.
4. The third season of Sherlock will shoot early next 2013 and will air later that spring. So we have one year.
5. Don't expect a Sherlock and DoctorWho meeting. Steven Moffat says that combining the two hasn't really crossed his mind- they just live in two different universes. He did add that it would be amusing to see Amy Pond and Doctor Watson get together and swap stories.
6. Benedict Cumberbatch (who recently won the Olivier award for his work) wants to bring the theater hit Frankenstein to New York. Finger's crossed.
7. Watching just a clip from season 2 will make you want to watch it again. Most of the hardcore fans (...and myself, I'll admit) took to the internet to watch the next season, which already premiered in England. In fact, very few audience members had not seen it. But that won't deter fans from watching it again this Sunday at 9. Thousands of screaming Cumberbitches can't lie- the series is just that good.
