You've probably started to notice that thirtysomething music geeks are acting a little differently lately. Whistling more often, wearing their favorite cardigan extensively, asking for a real whipped cream on their non-fat soy lattes, etc. Don't be alarmed—they're just excited that My Bloody Valentine is back. The shoegaze icons are set to re-released their classic albums Isn't Anything and Loveless (plus an all-new compilation EPs 1988-1991) on May 8... with their obscenely overdue third album and an all-new EP reportedly on their way later this year.
Listen Up: "Good For You" (Previously Unreleased) by My Bloody Valentine
In the meantime, our friends at The Guardian are offering a first listen to a previously unreleased alternate version of Loveless, personally remastered by perfectionist frontman Kevin Shields from the original 1/2-inch analogue tapes. You can listen to both versions of My Bloody Valentine's 1991 masterwork right here.
First thoughts? A resounding, "Hmm." I've listened to this album hundreds of times in almost every way imaginable (in the car, on my laptop, through my phone, with a huge set of studio headphones, etc.) so I expected some huge, noticeable differences. There aren't any— as one Guardian reader points out, "The way the guitars change tone together has a bit more clarity and fluidity to it than the original," though good luck hearing it if you aren't a devout Loveless scholar listening on a $200-plus pair of cans.
Still, we'll take any excuse to listen to one of the greatest alternative rock albums ever recorded for the umpteenth time, right? Let us know what you think of the new Loveless remaster and if you think it really differs from the original mix in our comments section below.
