Everyone knows what to expect from your typical Boston sports fan: a loud, cocky dude whose irrational takes on his team are tempered only by his outsize agony when his team loses. Once the agony passes, anger usually sets in, and Boston fans tend to lash out in the worst ways possible. In the case of Joel Ward's overtime goal last night, the worst way possible was RACISM.
How does one convey racism in the wake of a sports defeat, when the pain is fresh and coherent thoughts have yet to be formed? TWITTER. Chirpstory.com compiled some of the tweets that referred to Ward as a n*gger, and yes, they're as bad as you imagine. The good news -- if there is any -- is that Twitter is public, so all of these people have their racism on record. People like Brendan Maitland, who seems to be one of the few people who didn't delete the offensive tweets, and who, curiously, has the Detroit Red Wings logo as his avatar. Maybe he's just in it for the racism?
Sports and racism, unfortunately, go together like peas and carrots, and Boston historically has been a hotbed of racial tension in the United States. Joel Ward has likely faced this sort of thing before, especially since hockey is a homogeneous sport that tends not to treat black people too well, but it's still sad to see it happen.
And, as a reminder that Boston fans aren't bigoted assholes solely when they lose, here's that video from last year's Canadiens series, when fans tormented a Montreal fan with homophobic chants in the bathroom. At least they're consistent.
Have fun following the Bobby V Red Sox era this offseason, Boston fans! Yes, this is a generalization of all Boston sports fans that doesn't apply to everyone. I'm sure there are AT LEAST five Bruins fans out there who are decent people.
