Fans of The Postal Service still waiting for Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard and Dntel’s Jimmy Tamborello to record another new album together should probably stop holding their breath. Small consolation—the latter has a brand new album called Aimlessness dropping on June 5 via Pampa Records. If you haven’t already, download new song “Bright Night” right here and then hop over to Stereogum and listen to “Still” featuring Will Wiesenfeld from Baths.
First thoughts?
Love the swirling synthgaze intro and how it washes over the Discovery-era Daft Punk pop wash of Baths’ vocal snippets. There’s a restless energy throughout that feels unlike anything on Life Is Full Of Possibilities or Dumb Luck—if “Bright Night” was Tamborello returning to his bedroom IDM roots, then “Still” finds him stretching out in an adventurous new direction. Needless to say, I’m more than a little excited to see what else he’s got in store on Aimlessness.
