After being announced as Mitt Romney's new foreign policy surrogate, former Bush spokesman to the UN Richard Grenell spent the weekend performing selective surgery on his Twitter account, removing over 800 messages before kicking back with a Brosephtini and toasting to the memory hole. That was close, huh?
Alas, the internet is an eternal present in which nothing may ever be removed or forgotten. ThinkProgress has archived Grenell's Greatest Hits, all of which display a nasty distaste for women, politician's wives specifically, and their appearances especially. The winners, in ascending order of [sic]ness:
Forced to watch #msnbc on gym tv. The Rachel Maddow commercials can't possibly attract any viewers, aside from Bieber fans #DeadRinger
rachel maddow needs to take a breath and put on a necklace
Hillary is starting to look liek Madeline Albright
Hanging at the pool and realizing how expense it is to keep using sunscreen. How do law students pay for protection? #Fluke
Grossbook. Note that Grenell's misspellings have nothing to do with the 140 character limit of his medium; his misogyny is simply faster than his thumbs.
Grenell issued the requisite "Sorry you didn't find my awesomeness funny" apology last Friday, but apparently somebody in Romney's supervillain tower didn't think that would do the trick, and subsequently Grenell's Twitter account dropped from 7,577 tweets to 6,759.
For the rec, a sentient human on Twitter may think anything he wants, including whatever he wants about women, if he so chooses. But 1) Mitt Romney already has a problem with woman voters, and having @women_suck on his side ain't gonna help matters; and 2) deleting your opinions underscores that you know they're wrong and are cynically hiding what you really think for political purposes, none of which is likely to do much for people who might otherwise be forgiving of drummed-up salaciousness.
As an added irony to all this, some anti-gay groups are upset over Grenell's homosexuality, and they're taking to Twitter, too. "Romney picks out & loud gay as a spokesman," tweeted Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association. "If personnel is policy, his message to the pro-family community: drop dead." Grenell, who's fought long and hard for recognition of his partner by the State Department, probably wouldn't allow Fischer to renege on the awful things he's saying as easily as Grenell wants out of his own.
