Democrats are on the verge of nominating a young African American lawmaker named Barack "Hussein" Obama to their 2012 ticket, an unorthodox and daring response to the GOP's selection of shapeshifting business shark Mitt Romney.
The candidate will likely reach the threshold of delegates in the primary contests on Tuesday.
Obama, who has been campaigning on a populist ticket of ending the Bush tax cuts and reinvesting in America's middle class, has also drawn his fair share of criticism, including charges that he wasn't born in the United States, is not a Christian and uses a TelePrompTer. Presumably that nonsense would end upon the candidate's election to the esteemed office of President.
Democrats hope this young challenger's charisma, compelling life story, and passage of the largest piece of domestic legislation in 50 years will contrast fiercely with Mitt Romney's biography of savage capitalism, personal wealth and shifting positions. Progressives, meanwhile, appear to have a problem with Obama, as he has previously failed to live up to the promises they assumed he made.
Obama's race has already engendered commentary that his election would immediately end racism in the United States, and that any racism spotted thereafter would perforce be read into the world by the beholder, who is in fact the racist.
