According to the Times Herald-Record, famed drummer Levon Helm known best for his work with the Band has passed away at the age of 71 after a long battle with throat cancer. He was pronounced dead today (April 19) at 1:30 at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
Long-time friend and leader of the Band Larry Campbell issued a statement following Helm's death:
"We lost Levon at 1:30 today surrounded by friends and family and his musicians have visited him. As sad as this was, it was very peaceful."
While known most famously for his work with the Band, Helm worked with artists ranging from rockabilly star Ronnie Hawkins, Ringo Starr and the obvious Bob Dylan, and released several solo albums in the later years of his career.
"What I'm most proud of is he called me his partner," Campbell said. "For me to arrive at a place like that with a great man like him is the ultimate."
