The Shins haven't shied away from interesting, innovative music video releases in support of their fantastic new album Port Of Morrow (our review... check out the still-awesome "Simple Song" video here). Their latest—a Tim Burton-esque stop-motion animated clip directed by Jamie Caliri—has been available exclusively on the Nintendo 3DS for the past few weeks. Yes, cool idea... b-b-but what about the rest of us? Sad face. Never fear, the video made its proper internet debut early this morning. Check it out (via Nowness):
I'm on my third viewing and can't gush heavily enough about it. The animation is superb—love the quasi-steampunk, Neil Gaiman's Coraline style and all the tangible, handmade elements (the string out of the eyepatch is currently my favorite) and how the story compliments but never pulls directly from the song's already lush visual imagery. (As much as I would've loved to see a burning Fiat, it probably wouldn't have made much narrative sense. Maybe next time.) Obviously I can't comment on the video's 3D elements because I'm a washed-up has-been who wouldn't know the first thing about operating a Nintendo 3DS, but viewed the "old fashioned way", Caliri's "The Rifle's Spiral" is the wondrous latest in a long line of fantastic videos from The Shins.
If you need me, I'll be busy throwing playing cards around the Ology offices. In the meantime, let us know what you thought of the new Shins video in our comments section below. For more news, reviews, videos and tunes from your favorite bands, be sure to hit up our Music and Indie Rock Ologies.
