I'm so bored and tired of this kind of obvious, yet totally legal, injustice that I almost can't write about it. Wisconsin basketball coach Bo Ryan has followed in the footsteps of many college coaches before him in providing a list of schools to which forward Jarrod Uthoff cannot transfer. Sigh. The reason Ryan is making news is because the list of forbidden universities is so long that it couldn't escape notice: Uthoff cannot move to any Big Ten school, any ACC school, Marquette or Iowa State.
The kicker is that Bo Ryan's actions are completely legal according to NCAA laws, which is not surprising since the NCAA treats student-athletes as a combination of commodity and ideal. Hypocrisy abounds, and surely you will have read various criticisms of Ryan, most notable among them that if he were to leave Wisconsin, he could coach for any team he chose. The new school would probably pay him a bunch of money to do so.
It's our obligation to remind you that the NCAA is an outdated system that allows assholes like Ryan to go on unimpeded power trips, but it's really tiring us. Go get 'em, Badgers. Can't wait for your Sweet Sixteen Tournament exit next year.
