It took a long time (I'm talking, months and months) for Linkin Park's A Thousand Suns to make a serious impression, so it's certainly possible that next year, I'll be raving about how much I love their new single "Burn It Down". At the moment-- yeah, not so much. The first taste of the (now-) post-nu-metal group's upcoming fifth album Living Things (out June 26) made its way online via an elaborate lyrics video incorporating the album's headscratch-worthy album artwork. (That's two in a row, fellas.)

Alright, so let's get the nice stuff out of the way. I really like the guitar/keyboard sounds they're working with here—it touches on the old aggro guitar sound without ever really going there, which is kind of interesting. Beyond that… I don't know, lots of heavy sighing happening right now. I really wish I hadn't seen those typically sophomoric lyrics, or heard another soaring chorus that fails to leave much of an impression. It's great that Mike Shinoda has something to do on the track, but his wishy-washy rhyming was beginning to wear thin ten years ago—now it's flat-out cringe-worthy.
So yeah, a little disappointing as far as first singles go—but then again, was anyone freaking out about "The Catalyst" back in '10?
