Bad news: some nail polishes that have been parading around
as non-toxic and safe for all uses are, in fact, toxic. The Department of Toxic
Substances Control has found several nail polishes containing
formaldehyde, toluene and dibutyl phthalate (DBP), which can't be good news for 7-year-old girls' birthday parties everywhere. This toxic trio has been banned in all nail products in the European Union and the three have been found to cause cancer, asthma and birth defects when inhaled.
According to the Associated Press, "10 of 12 products that claimed to be free of toluene actually contained it, with four of the products having dangerously high levels. The report also found that five of seven products that claimed to be 'free of the toxic three' included one or more of the agents in significant levels."
The issue isn't that the chemicals are in the nail polishes - that's been known, which is why you should always use them in well-ventilated areas - it's that the companies didn't own up to it.
Will you be second guessing your nail polish from now on? I don't think I could - Baubing for Baubles is just too pretty on your fingers!
