Football coach Bobby Petrino will be fired by Arkansas, ESPN's Joe Schad reports. Or has been fired. Schad didn't really specify. But who the hell cares, this is the internet, where - like major college football - almost anything goes.
The "almost" is what apparently cost Petrino - meaning in this case that he gave his mistress a job at the University, took her for a motorcycle ride, crashed and then lied about it. It actually says a lot about the state of college football that people are generally greeting the news of Petrino's (reported) firing with surprise.
How can Arkansas fire Bobby Petrino, everyone has been saying. He's won so many football games.
But you've got to draw the line somewhere, I guess. Not even a rally held today in support of Petrino - which was attended by 200 people and produced some really funny pictures - could save Petrino.
You'll excuse me if I'm being glib - I do feel for Razorbacks fans, who have been blindsided by this story. But the reality is, Bobby Petrino will probably find a new job pretty damn fast. Maybe he'll take a year off. Or maybe he'll find a new home by the end of the week.
Petrino gave Arkansas no choice but to fire him - he lied to the faces of his superiors, and embarrassed the University. But as soon as another school is looking for a new football coach they'll say hey, what about Petrino - he's a hell of a coach. And sure he got fired for lying and embarrassing the University of Arkansas, but he hasn't yet lied to US, or embarrassed OUR University, so let's pick this guy up!
Where do you think Petrino will find his next job?
