From Reuters:
The special prosecutor in the investigation of the shooting death of unarmed Florida teenager Trayvon Martin has ruled out using a grand jury to investigate the case, meaning her office alone will decide whether to charge shooter George Zimmerman.
State Attorney Angela Corey was appointed by Governor Rick Scott as special prosecutor after local state attorney Norm Wolfinger recused himself from the case. Wolfinger had called for a grand jury to convene on April 10.
The Miami Herald notes that this is not uncommon for Corey, "who has a reputation for not presenting cases before grand juries if it wasn't required. Under Florida law," the Herald continues, "only first-degree murder cases require the use of grand juries."
Corey's office said the investigation will continue, and that the decision not to convene a jury would not be a factor in whether shooter George Zimmerman would ultimately be arrested or not.
