Think back to this time last year when everyone in the (western) world was speculating who would design Kate Middleton's gown for the Royal Wedding. Though names like John Galliano, Marchesa, Stella McCartney and Jenny Packham were tossed around, all signs pointed to Sarah Burton, but she hotly dismissed any rumors. As it turns out, Burton - who sent a series of bridal-inspired gowns the runway just a month earlier to keep suspicions at bay - is also an exquisite liar.
As Grazia reports, the Burton - who took over at Alexander McQueen following his untimely death in 2010 - finally admits to purposefully featuring a bridal range for Fall 2011 so there would be a reason to order tons of high quality white fabric without raising suspicion at the British fashion house. But what happens when Anna Wintour asks you, in person, to tell the truth? Hamish Bowles reported:
"Anna looked Sarah in the eye – an experience that would jelly the marrow of bigger people – and asked, “Are you designing Kate Middleton’s dress?” and Sarah said, “I am not designing the dress.”‘ Blimey, what a brave lady! ‘So Anna was telling everyone, “Sarah told me she’s not doing the dress, so she’s not doing the dress.” Now Anna admits Sarah did an amazing job."
Perhaps Ms. Wintour isn't the ultimate ice queen after all....
