If you were around hip-hop last year, then you definitely caught the successes on Childish Gambino's mainstream debut Camp, and while it's only been a short bit since it released, he's apparently already up to some new sounds for an untitled project, this new record "Eat Your Vegetables" being the preview.
Listen: I'm all down with Donald--the guy has similes, can flow, and weaves in his comedian side with the music, but this gangster deal he's trying to pull on most (there's a verse that's more usual to his style) of "Eat Your Vegetables" isn't fitting. He sounds halfway to a poor man's ScHoolboy Q blended with A$AP Rocky (not the "Hands on the Wheel" A$AP), and it just doesn't match. It's like calling the cat "dog." It's not a bad track, but in preference, I'd sacrifice it for the tones we got on "Outside" or "You See Me" without second though.
Anyway, here's "Eat Your Vegetables," give it a listen, throw up your thoughts. My only guess is that Donald's trying to push away from the whole "Heartbeat" deal.
By the way: anyone notice a mention of the J. Cole/Diggy Simmons diss circumstance in there? Keep an ear out...
