[reporting by Joe Drake]
Let’s face it: every drag queen in the America wants to be on RuPaul’s Drag Race. But after you accomplish that goal, every queen then wants to be in that elusive top five. Then of course, they want to make it to the final three and ultimately win- but making it more than halfway counts for something, right?
The lucky queen to make it there this season was none other than Ms. Dida Ritz. The Chicago star knew how to work a runway and after being too timid, finally mustered up the courage to talk back to the judges. Joe Drake took some time to chat with Dida about her time spent on Drag Race, who she thinks should win, and what she thinks of the other girls. Plus she opens up about the special video message she received from her mother!
OLOGY: So how does it feel the day after your elimination episode?
I mean, it’s sad. It kind of feels like after all that hard work you walked out of class getting a ‘D’ on your math exam.
Are you relieved?
Yeah. It is definitely a relief. I mean, I saw myself getting picked on a lot so it was nice to actually speak up for myself. I got aggressive towards the end there and I am glad that came across rather than getting kicked off and not really speaking my mind.
Definitely. It’s really important that, at the end of the day, you get your voice heard on the show.
Absolutely.
What were some of your favorite moments?
I would have to say the runways. I felt gorgeous up there. Being in front of RuPaul and the judges was such a thrill. Standing up there and getting read by Ru and all of the guest judges and Michelle Visage, it was just crazy.
We bet! I’m curious about your thoughts on the last four girls standing. Well, technically, it could be a different top four since they are bringing back one of the eliminated queens. It could be you!
(Brief silence.)
Let’s just stick with the remaining four girls. Thoughts on Latrice Royale?
I love her. Latrice is just so polished and sexy, and she’s representing for the plus-sized girls up there! I love Latrice.
Sharon Needles?
Sharon and I are good friends. I love her drag and way of thinking. She’s not a showgirl, you know? She is like a gimmick queen, but in a really good way. I love her.
Ms. Phi Phi O’Hara?
[Laughs] Well, Phi Phi and I were friends before this season started so we’ve known each other. She’s definitely a shit talker and she owns up to that. But, she’s great: she’s a talented pageant girl. Her antics might get her in trouble but we’re cool.
How about Chad Michaels?
Professional! That is the only word that can be used to describe her during this experience. I learned so much from her. I got to work with her during the duet challenge and we had a blast. It was so much fun! Another thing about her is her crazy organization. Her station is always so perfect. All of her hairspray cans are lined up and her makeup is so perfectly placed. I have really learned from that and always try to have a really professional and neat station when I go places.
Out of those girls, who do you think deserves to win?
I’ve said it before and I am going to say it now, I am really rooting for Sharon Needles. She would be the first non-black winner—yeah, I said it! [Laughs] Her whole style of drag is so cool. She would be such a great representation as the winner of our season. She really takes it to the next level. I mean, Lady Gaga tweeted her this morning!
I know I saw that! Sharon’s life has changed forever because of that damn tweet. [Laughs]
Yep! [Laughs]
After your time spent on RuPaul’s Drag Race what would you like your legacy to be to all of the young boys out there that are dreams of red lipstick and high heels?
I would really want them to know that they don’t have to go with the flow. If they want to play with lipstick and heels they can. And they can do it NOW! They don’t have to wait till they are 18 and not living with Mom and Dad anymore. They should feel free to be their own person and do it now. Don’t wait!
I love that message. So many people say something similar to that but I think it is important to tell them that it is okay to be who they are now. Not later, when they’ve been so affected by some of the ignorant people in our society.
Absolutely!
