Oh, UT. Like a 7-5 football season wasn't bad enough.
The Daily Texan, University of Texas-Austin's student newspaper, ran an editorial cartoon yesterday by Stephanie Eisner titled "Treyvon (sic) Martin and the Case of Yellow Journalism," that portrays the media as skewing the story of Martin's death to an unsuspecting public. In the cartoon, the media, sitting in a rocking chair labeled The Media*, tells a small child, "AND THEN, the BIG BAD WHITE man killed the HANDSOME sweet innocent COLORED BOY!!" Well, the kid is just appalled.
Gawker first caught the cartoon, and noted that it had been taken down even as they were penning an article on it. The cartoon was back up later in the afternoon, accompanied by an explanation that it had been removed due to the traffic it was generating. The Daily Texan stands by its publication of the cartoon, though not the content itself.
In an interview with the paper, Eisner said she felt the media was distorting the narrative of the case by introducing race as a component.
TM Daily Post has a rundown of angry reactions, with the best coming from Ben Sherman of Burnt Orange Report, a Texas political blog, who argued that the media is talking about race in Martin's shooting because Martin's shooting sure seems to be about race.
Close followers of UT antics will recall a few months ago, when the president of the College Republicans tweeted that assassinating President Obama was "tempting;" her replacement quickly tweeted that "My president is black, he snorts a lot of crack. Holla! #2012." I lived in Austin for eight years, and can testify to its laid-back, tolerant vibe. Why a smattering of UT students want to convince the nation otherwise is beyond me.
