Damon Albarn (Sort Of) Confirms Blur Will Record New Album In Hong Kong
Bands have formed, released albums and broken up in the time Blur has spent deliberating whether they will or won't record a follow-up to 2003's sans Graham Coxon swan song Think Tank. Has Damon Albarn finally made up his mind this time? Certainly sounds like it: at a concert in Hong Kong last night, Albarn reportedly announced the cancellation of an upcoming Japanese tour leg, adding: "So we have a week in Hong Kong, and we thought it would be a good time to try and record another record."

Now, I know, a week doesn't seem like much time to record a new album… especially one with such towering expectations… but ...
If I had to guess, I'd say that Britpop icon Damon Albarn would prefer it we'd stop bugging him about a new Blur album and start talking about his actual current project—the soundtrack to his critically acclaimed 2011 opera Dr Dee, which hits stores and playlists on May 8 via Virgin Records. Recorded in Salford late last year with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, the album features lead single "The Marvelous Dream"—you can check out its refreshingly simple video below (via Consequence Of Sound):
Longtime Blur fans will attest that Damon very rarely writes about himself, and his latest collection of songs are no different—the opera details the life of 16th century mathematician, astronomer and all-around scientific Renaissance Man John Dee, personal advisor to Queen Elizabeth I. "The Marvelous Dream" flirts with alchemy and the occult over a gentle acoustic guitar strum, an ominous keyboard throb and some chant-like background vocal harmonies. Having grown accustomed to the sound of his more lavish, musically dense projects, it's a real treat to hear Damon's voice in such minimal, understated surroundings again.
Albarn promises that the Dr Dee album will feature "early English choral and instrumentation alongside modern, West African and Renaissance sounds." I promise it's going to be awesome.
